Page Remake: Nature Tripping

I wanted to do all the pages from our AL road trip in a series, but I still have a few more pages to go.  For this one, I was in a fussy cutting mood.  I had patterned paper scraps with these really pretty (and big!) blossoms that made me want to cut them out.  For the leaves, I embossed some off white cardstock and cut out the shapes as well to sort of balance out the bright colors.

Now, Mario is a picture taking kind of guy.  And he also loved to do goofy poses, hence the pic with him crawling in the dirt (he reminds me of Gollum, only happier :p).  And after a while he took a photo of me I looking tired (I actually was, in that bottom right picture).  And it's because I was wearing the wrong kind of footwear, not even shoes, just the kind of thing that you slip on.  So the hiking was a bit of struggle for me and I had blisters on my feet afterwards.  And I never wore those slip-ons again. :(

Journaling:  "Even though Rod & I had a tiring day (and night) with the wedding on May 27, we tried (well, I tried) to get up early and go along with what Mario had planned for us the next day.  Unfortunately, Rod couldn't come along as he was going to spend the day with Bryan and Sheryl (the newlyweds) and their other friends & family.  Mario and I headed to Oak Mountain Park.  The hiking was nice since we had great weather that day.  Also went to the lake to go pedal boating (not sure what it's really called :))and got to see a lot of ducks.  I found that the city of Birmingham, Alabama has the same feel as Baguio.  That made me a little homesick.  But I also had a nice and relaxing time. :)"

Chubby Cheeks

I haven't done any layouts in a while and I wanted to make one using the sketch for challenge #18 at the Filipino Scrapbook Challenge Blog.  The last entry I made for the challenges was about a month and a half ago.  And now that I'm currently working on moving to and organizing a new craft area, I'm looking forward to getting more craft stuff done.  For starters, it was a lot easier putting this layout together because I already have most of my tools and supplies sorted out (they just need to be put away).

So my take on the sketch is fairly simple and straightforward, except that I used two photos instead of one in an 8.5"x11" format.  I've had these pictures of my niece for a while now (she's a little girl now).  The journaling goes:  "You're not used to having your picture taken yet, that's why you're not smiling.  But still, you're oh so cute!!!  CHUBBY CHEEKS Jasmine Dana / August 2008".

Hiding in Plain Sight

Since Easter is only a couple of weeks away, I decided to make an Easter-themed layout.  It was supposed to be my entry to challenge #15 at the Filipino Scrapbookers Challenge Blog, but for some reason (and I'm sure the time on my computer is correct), I couldn't link up my entry anymore even if it was more than five minutes 'til midnight.  I was so disappointed because although I didn't think I would make the deadline (as I only started tonight), I was done with around 20 mins to spare.  All I had to do was take a picture of my layout, edit and then upload it here, and then submit my entry to FSCB.  But it wouldn't let me *sigh*.  Serves me right for leaving it to the last minute (yet again). 

In any case, this page was based on a a beautiful sketch by LG Belarmino.  I wanted to make something really happy and spring-y (the season, not the metal coil).

Since we have such a big family with little kids, we have an Easter egg hunt every year on Easter Sunday.  We've been doing it for some time now, but the one pictured here is the first one that my nephew, Dyllan, joined in.  He was the youngest among the kids being just a little over one year old at the time (2008) and needed some help from his Mama and Papa.  I think he had a lot of fun though, because he looks forward to the egg hunt every year.  

This year, we're planning to decorate our eggs because we missed doing it last year when we used plastic eggs.  Which were very bright and colorful and had candy inside it, but it took away from the fun of doing something crafty :)  Here are some eggs we decorated way back in 2008.  

We deliberately left them not-so-well-hidden, so the kids (half of them toddlers) would find them easily.  Can you spot them?  There is actually a good reason for having taken the pictures of the eggs we hid: in case they weren't found, we could still track them down (as we'd likely forget where they were all hidden).  The adults do not have as good a memory as we used to :-b

How cute!

My  very first layout this year, 2013.  I have lots of projects planned, but had deadlines last week that had to be met.  And so I grabbed the chance to do something crafty this weekend.  Well, after I slept most of the day yesterday to get rid of a migraine :(  I finished this really really late last night (or really really early this morning).  This page is about my niece, Jillian, describing how cute and adorable she was when she was two years old.  She's still cute now (at six), but her cheeks and little fingers are chubby no more.

This is my entry for challenge #12 at the Filipino Scrapbookers Challenge Blog, based on a sketch by Kathleen Hernandez (click here to see her blog).  I hope it doesn't look too much like one of my entries for challenge #3.  It seems I'm not yet over my hexagon fixation and I needed to do some more.  And personally, I think this has a different feel - a bit sweet and girly.

A close up of the photo and the area around it.  All the hexagons were cut out of scraps of patterned paper from the handmade gifts I made over the holidays.  Flower punch outs and photo mat are also made from paper scraps.  It seems that for the past several layouts I've done, I haven't used any brand new paper (except for the card stock base).  And that's a good way to start the year, isn't it? :)

Twelve Crafty Days of Christmas - Day 7: Holiday Mixup

My entry to challenge #11 at the Filipino Scrapbookers Challenge Blog.  I readily selected the photos as soon as I saw the sketch, but only got to work on the layout today.

It's quite a literal interpretation of the sketch by Melissa Bonifacio, but I used an 8.5" x 11" format instead of a 12"x12" or 8"x8" page.  I also had a title and journaling in mind when I first picked the photos out, which are actually a bit blurry but I thought it would be a fun moment to scrap about.

Journaling:  "HOLIDAY MIXUP - No, your eyes are not deceiving you, the kids are indeed wearing their Halloween costumes with a Christmas tree in the background.  They were not able to go trick-or-treating that year.  And so on this particular weekend in December, the cousins just wanted to dress up.  Jared the pirate, Jonas the ninja, Dyllan the cowboy, Jessica the fairy, and Jillian the lady bug."

Tummy Time

It is 9:32pm on Nov. 30, 2012.  Challenge #10 on the Filipino Scrapbooker's Blog is about to end in a little less than 2-1/2 hours.  As of now, I have nothing done.  I am challenging myself to beat the deadline again.  This is a lot worse than the last time as I only got home at 8:00pm, had dinner first and then did stuff online.  So we will see how this goes.

It's now 10:56pm and I'm almost done with my layout.  All that's left is the title and journaling.  It's a really simple page, but I'm having a bit of writer's block.  Not a bit actually, it feels like a major one... well, at least for now.

And so, here is my finished page.  I had planned to use the same set of pictures and papers for the previous challenge, but since I didn't find the time to do it, I used them here.  So I didn't really start from scratch.  The borders were actually cut from paper scraps and glued together a week ago.  I wanted to use them for a card I was supposed to make, but decided to use them here instead.  The papers are from the Everyday Eclectic Kit I purchased from Ms. April Lim some weeks ago.  I wanted to start working on some pages as soon as I got the kit, but this month was so busy.  And that is why I wasn't able to submit an entry for Challenge #9.  November is usually a busy month for me, both due to work obligations and home/family stuff.  But this month has been incredibly hectic, I can hardly wait for the Christmas break!

Fight for your right

Sadly, this is another last minute post.  I just wanted to make an entry for Challenge #8 at the Filipino Scrapbookers Challenge Blog.  The past two weeks have been super hectic and I just finished my grades when I started on this layout.  This is actually a remake of a page from my old US scrapbook.  I wish I could've done more with it, but it's nearly midnight and it had to be posted.  Oh well...

PS. [10 hrs later] After I had uploaded the layout, I wasn't quite satisfied with how it turned out.  It appears that 30-something minutes is just not enough to work on it.  I actually had the pictures ready for some time.  And since the sketch looked like it would be fun to do, I was planning on doing a more elaborate page this time.  But alas, I've had to deal with deadlines and so I was swamped with work for the past two weeks.  So I decided to add a little more to it after I posted it.  I just added a couple more punched out arrows and some bling (All About Scrapbooking).  So technically, this one pictured below is NOT MY ENTRY, since I finished it after the deadline.  But I did have fun putting the bling on where I had to cut the gem stickers individually and stick them down on the page according to a design in my head.  I've been wanting to do that for a long time now, but never got around to doing it 'til now.

Radiant

The fourth and last entry to Challenge #7 of the Filipino Scrapbookers Challenge Blog.  Another layout in which I didn't do much.  The papers from the Magical line from All About Scrapbooking are perhaps my most favorite 8"x8" patterned paper set.  But what I found is that when it was time to work with them, I felt a bit constricted by the design.  The papers are really beautiful, but I guess I couldn't do much with them except add pictures, the title and some journaling.  Which should be good if I wanted to do pages quickly, but I guess that is just not my style.  I usually like to add a little bit more to my pages, do something more creative and involved.  But maybe it was also because I was trying to beat the deadline (again!) that left me with the feeling that I hadn't done enough.  It looks a little bare to me, to be honest.  Oh well, at least I got to scrap some more pictures.  Can't wait to NOT CRAM the next challenge. ;-)

Groom Aglow

You don't often find a groom being described as "glowing".  The bride, yes, but the groom... well, not really.  But that was exactly what my brother, Paul, looked like in these pictures taken as he was getting ready for the wedding.  After the stress of all the wedding preps, here you see him spending some time with family and his close friends, even joking and goofing around. Seeing all the hard work he and Ica put into this day, I'm glad to see that they were able to enjoy it.

Another very simple layout, as the design of the paper can definitely stand on its own.  All I did to add to is was stamp the title and some subtle designs as a background for the pictures.  I have very dreadful stamping skills and I obviously need to practice some more.  I don't know if it's the white ink that's not compatible with the smooth-ish paper.  But I'm really not blaming the equipment, it's all on me.  :P

The Ring Bearer's Speech

A really simple layout about my nephew, Jonas, who was the ring bearer at my brother's wedding.  As most people in our family (the older ones especially) are bit shy about public speaking, the task fell on this little boy's shoulders.  Well, not-so-little anymore, as he proved to be very capable and quite the charmer as he certainly engaged his audience with his heartfelt speech. 

There really was no need to do much as the patterned paper was great by itself.  I only added the pictures, some journaling and the title.  The journaling consists of snippets from Jonas' speech handwritten on the swirls in the dark blue sky, around the sun's rays and right along the blades of grass.

This is my second entry to Challenge #7 on the Filipino Scrapbookers Challenge Blog.  I had four pages planned, but have so far been able to fully finish two.  With about 2-1/2 hrs to go 'til midnight, we'll just have to see how this goes.  It's getting harder and harder to sneak in my scrappy time when we're already well into the school year.   Sigh!

Enchanting

This time around, when I looked at the sketch for Challenge #7 at the Filipino Scrapbookers Challenge Blog when October began, I had some ideas on what I wanted to do.  It was such a versatile sketch by Kathleen Hernandez, that I thought there was so much room to be creative.

But as I was going through my stash for stuff I could use, I came across this set of 8"x8" papers called Magical from All About Scrapbooking and most of the designs included celestial bodies nestled in one corner.  The designs simply lent themselves to the sketch, that it seemed the sketch was made with these papers in mind!  I already took out some pictures that would fit right in with the theme.  And since I still have a bunch of pictures from my brother's wedding last year, I used those again.  But this time, these are pictures of some of the cutest people in the entourage - my nieces and nephew.

This layout is all about my niece, Jasmine, looking all calm and peaceful right before the wedding, in the midst of everyone rushing around her.  Since the paper already had a beautiful design to it, I didn't want to add too much.  I did add die-cut and punched out flowers to hide some things that didn't go with the overall design/color scheme.  I actually rotated the paper 90 degrees clockwise to get the sphere (I think it's the moon) where I want it, so I can position the picture at the lower left corner.  As a result, there were awkwardly positioned birds near the bottom of the page that had to be covered up.  Same goes with the bright green stars that came with the paper.  And since the left side of the picture was adorned with artificial poinsettias that were part of the church's Christmas decor (it was a December wedding), I had to cover those as well.

Journaling:  "In the hustle and bustle that comes with getting ready for a much anticipated wedding, here you are - all CALM and SERENE.  How I wish that we could all take a moment to stand back and happily watch as life unfolds, like you do."

Life is Sweet

I challenged myself (and I guess I've been thinking about it since early this morning) to do another interpretation of Sketch #6 from the Filipino Scrapbookers Challenge Blog.  The object is to use the same sketch, the same set of pictures, the same stamps, but give the layout a completely different feel.  If you've seen my previous entry (click here to check it out), you'll find that it's simple and a bit formal (lots of florals, monochromatic and also very structured)... quite appropriate for wedding photos.  For this one, I wanted it to be more playful.  So I used bold colors (mostly pink, to get as close to monochromatic as it could) and put many of the elements askew.  I curled up the edges of the pennants on the banner to make them look more dimensional (and also a bit realistic, like they're flapping in the wind).  I also rotated the sketch 90 degrees clockwise.  Best of all, I used up a lot of scraps for this one - the only new stuff I used were the mini-brads and the embossed frame, which I've had in my stash for a long time now, it's just great that I get to use them finally.  This is actually a bit of a stretch for me making something that looks less structured and carefree, but I look at it and it just makes me feel happy.

Mr. & Mrs.

I recently finished a long overdue mini album for my brother and sister-in-law.  It's all about their wedding and I used a chipboard mini album that spells out "LOVE", which I've had in my stash for a long time now (will post an entry about it soon).  In any case, when I was done with the album, I still had plenty of pictures left.  So I thought to use the leftover pics and how fortunate that part of my prize as randomly drawn winner at the Filipino Scrapbookers Challenge Blog last July, was a wedding themed patterned paper stack from Hot Off the Press (btw, many thanks to Memory Lane Store for the prize). 

I've had the idea for this layout for about a week now but didn't really get to work on it 'til today.  The wedding themed papers were great and I thought it would be nice to do a very simple monochromatic page for this one.  The wedding pictures already looked great that I really didn't want to embellish the page too much and mainly did a literal translation of the sketch by Melissa Bonifacio for Challenge #6 at the Filipino Scrapbookers Challenge Blog.

I actually finished three different projects today, so I'm a bit drained.  But quite grateful that I did get to finish this one.  I hope I have time tomorrow to do some more.

My Shining Star

This is cutting it real close.  I had planned to make this layout about my sister and her baby girl a while ago.  With such as sweet picture, how can I go wrong?  But since I've been so terribly busy with work since September started, the few times I had a moment to spare, I wasn't feeling inspired enough.  So here's to beating deadlines... my entry for Challenge #5 at the Filipino Scrapbookers Challenge Blog.

Sentiment:  "All the dreams I prayed you'd be are all the things you are.  You were once my little girl and now my shining star."

Page Remake: Little One

I did this one, if I remember correctly, back in May (when things haven't gotten so busy yet).  It's just so amazing that this precious little baby is almost a teenager now.  Their family moved away a few months after his christening.  And although we exchanged phone calls, emails, and Christmas cards, and even got to see each other a few times, I must confess that I have to do a better job of keeping in touch.  Time just goes by so fast.  Before you know it, Connor's probably finished college, gotten married, and having babies of his own.  Well, hopefully, not anytime soon!

Page Remake: Birthday Buddies

We're well into September by now and one of the things that stand out about this month is that a big bunch of people that I know celebrate their birthdays in Sept.  In my family alone, there's my eldest nephew, my sister, my paternal grandmother, my maternal grandfather, and of course, Vicenta.  Among my friends they are probably too many to count right now.  But here is a layout about a small subset of those, who I spent a lot of time with during grad school.  And though we don't get to celebrate birthdays together anymore (I miss these guys so much), here's to wishing they're always happy and memorable!

A teacher is like a tree.

I did this page for some of my most favorite people in the world.  I worked with this bunch for, give or take, a couple of years.  I have a lot of love and respect for these people.  Some of us have already moved on, and of the original eight people in this pic, only half of us are left.  But even with the group we have now, it seems we are just one big happy family where we just keep adding people and nobody really leaves (at least in my heart).  The journaling is heartfelt, though probably riddled with mistakes, since I just winged it (and I haven't written anything like this in a long while).

 Journaling:  A teacher is like a tree.  It gives nourishment to flowers, fruits, & seeds, and provides them with what they need to thrive one day on their own.  And though the thought of it hurts, it knows it has to someday let go.  Its branches are extensive - because in order to teach, one must not only grow in one direction... one must branch out and grow in so many different ways.  Though what you see above ground, majestic it may be, is not all that it is - its roots are deep as well.  One must be grounded in one's values & beliefs.  It's important to remember that one teaches not only by what is said or done within the confines of the classroom, but by the way that one lives his life.  A tree continues to grow - the process of learning is a lifelong endeavor... it never stops.  A tree is strong and tough - able to withstand whatever challenges the world around it may throw from time to time.  It gives of itself with the purpose of allowing others to grow.

Flower Power

At last, I finally found a bit of time to work on a couple of pages for challenge #4 on the Filipino Scrapbookers Challenge Blog.  I woke up with a migraine yesterday morning, so I spent most of the day sleeping it off,  and it wasn't until yesterday evening that the headache was gone.  With the weekend just about to  start (we had Saturday classes this week), I thought it would be nice to take a craft break, since I haven't really done anything since last Sunday.

So here is the first entry - a page about my niece, Jillian.  The pictures were taken during her younger sister's birthday party last year.  They had a "Tangled"-themed party, so all the girls had flowers in their hair.  These pictures made me really happy just by looking at them.  It took a while to come up with a title, but once I decided on "Flower Power", I just had to pile on the blooms.

Horses are fun!

It was a long weekend we had been waiting for so we could go to Tagaytay for a bit of a break.  We planned on taking  the boys swimming, horseback riding, and maybe go to the zoo.  When that weekend came, the forecast wasn't all that good - it was supposed to rain.  So on the first bit of sunshine we did get (it was actually cloudy, but at least it wasn't raining), we headed outside and took advantage of the weather. 

I'm not one to follow trends or experiment much, but I must say, I did step out of my comfort zone a bit in this layout.  I found a super cute mini album in Echo Park's youtube channel that had some hexagons in them.  I thought that would be a fun element on this page.  After cutting out and placing all the little hexagons on a diagonal and positioning the pictures and journaling block (which I made again from scratch just like in Girly Girl), the top right part seemed to need something else.  I started considering adding paint to make it look less structured and more carefree.  Although I didn't like the idea of dripping all over the pics, so I used post-it notes and some scratch paper to mask the area I wanted to keep clean.  Next time, I probably should do the paint first before putting other things down (lesson learned). :)

This is most likely my last entry to the Filipino Scrapbookers Challenge Blog challenge #3.  Next week is our exam week so the next couple of weeks are sure to be busy.  Although I do hope I get some time to work on the next challenge.  I didn't expect to make as many pages as I did this week, but with school out the whole time because of the horrible weather, I had plenty of time to work on those pages.

Sweet Sassy Baby

Sweet and sassy... that's our Jasmine!  We all still call her "Baby" because she is the youngest of four siblings, even though she's already 4 years old and that there are two younger cousins that we now also call "Baby" (as they are also the youngest among their own brood).  But I suppose Baby Jasmine has held on to the name the longest by far and nobody has yet decided to call her otherwise.  Perhaps when she starts school next year...

Although these are all group pictures, you can probably tell which one she is - the one with the sweetest smile in the pics on the left, and the one showing a bit of sass in the pics on the right.  She's a very sweet and thoughtful little girl most of the time, but she sometimes shows what a temper she's got when the other kids cross her.  I find it quite funny that the bigger kids are a bit scared of her - they definitely can not push this girl around.
